What is a “pain pump?”

Intrathecal drug delivery, or a “pain pump,” is a method of injecting medication directly into the area around your spinal cord. The system employs a surgically-implanted pump; placed under the skin of your abdomen and delivers medication (e.g., morphine) through a catheter.

The medication is injected directly into the subarachnoid (or intrathecal) space, which contains cerebrospinal fluid around the spinal cord, so your symptoms can usually be controlled with a smaller dose than with oral medication.
