You ask a million dollar question that will be addressed at Mark's NYC forum. There w/be experts talking about the efficacy of "savlage"/fixit re-entry surgery. From my reading, fusion can be an alternative but not *always*.
For this reason alone, if I had surgery, I'd really baby my back.

Severe, extensive DDD, considered inoperable by Dr. Regan, Lauressen, & some guy at UCLA. Severe foraminal stenosis (guess they can't operate!) and some spinal cord compression that Lauryssen would fix if gets outta hand.
